Just because school is out for the rest of the summer doesn’t mean that learning has to come to a stop. Did you know that most students will lose about a month’s worth of learning skills over the summer? There are plenty of fun ways to incorporate learning into your summer activities and keep those brains active!
Build vocabulary with a word jar.
Fill a jar with pieces of paper and write a different word on each. Every day, have your student/child draw a word, define it, and use it in a conversation that day!
Play summer reading bingo
Create a summer reading list and put each book title on a bingo sheet. Each time your student/child meets a reading goal, cross it off of the bingo sheet.
Play an outdoor memory game
Gather paper plates and write a word on each one (make sure to have pairs of each!) Turn the plates upside down and have your student/child try to find the match.
Outdoor alphabet match
Write the alphabet with chalk on your driveway. Then, using paper letters, have your student/child match the paper letter to the chalk one!
Sidewalk word ladder
Draw a ladder on your driveway with sidewalk chalk. Write a word in each space and have your student/child sound out each one. Once they get one correct, they jump up the ladder to the next space!
Read the book before watching the movie
Find a great book that has been made into a movie. Read the book first and then compare it to the movie!
Car Bingo
Create a car bingo card with words that children will likely see during a trip (stop signs, billboards, railroad signs, etc.) to reinforce reading skills.
Capital Game
Take note of each license plate you see and identify the state capitol. The one who gets to 10 correct answers first wins!
Plan a dream trip
Have kids use the Internet, travel guidebooks, brochures, and maps to plan a dream day trip!
Learning doesn’t have to be a bore - - anyone can make it fun with just a few of these ideas! There are opportunities everywhere.
